Sewer Line Repair Long Beach

Sewer line problems in Long Beach span a range from simple blockages that clear with cable augering to structural failures in the underground pipe that require excavation and replacement. The diagnostic step that separates effective sewer work from guesswork is camera inspection. Long Beach Pro Plumbing Inc runs a camera through every sewer line where the nature of the problem is not immediately confirmed by the cable, and we use that footage to make decisions based on what the pipe actually looks like rather than assumptions.

Long Beach’s sewer infrastructure in older residential neighborhoods includes vitrified clay pipe, which was the standard material for residential sewer laterals through much of the twentieth century. Clay pipe is chemically inert and handles wastewater well when intact, but it is rigid and prone to cracking at joints as the ground around it shifts over decades. Tree root intrusion through clay pipe joints is extremely common in Long Beach neighborhoods with mature street trees, particularly ficus, pepper trees, and eucalyptus, all of which have aggressive root systems that actively seek moisture.

Camera inspection of a clay sewer lateral typically reveals one of a few conditions. A laterally cracked joint allows root infiltration, and the roots visible in the camera image indicate the severity of the intrusion. Offset joints occur when the pipe segments have shifted out of alignment, creating a ledge that traps solids. A bellied section is a low spot in the line where the pipe has settled, creating a pooling area that accumulates solids and eventually backs up. Each of these conditions has a different repair implication.

Root intrusion that has not yet caused structural damage to the pipe can often be addressed with hydro jetting to clear the root mass followed by chemical root treatment to inhibit re-growth through the affected joint. This extends the service life of the line but is not a permanent solution. A cracked or offset joint will continue to allow root entry, and the long-term fix is replacement of the affected section.

Trenchless sewer repair methods are applicable in situations where the host pipe is structurally sound enough to serve as a mold. Cured-in-place pipe lining installs a felt liner saturated with epoxy resin into the existing pipe and cures it in place, creating a new pipe within the old one. This approach eliminates the need to excavate the affected section and is particularly valuable under driveways, landscaping, and hardscaping in Long Beach properties where open trench work would create significant additional cost and restoration work.

When a section of sewer line is collapsed, severely offset, or too deteriorated for lining, traditional open trench replacement of the affected section is necessary. We coordinate permit requirements with the City of Long Beach and restore the excavated area properly after the repair is complete.
